Wordle Tips & Best Practices

I have gathered a list of best practices after analzying 1500+ wordle words that can help you solve puzzle in future

Choose the Best Start Word

Your first guess is really important, as A strong Wordle starting word covers common vowels (A, E, I, O, U) and most used consonants (R, S, T, L, N). Choosing the best starting word, you can maximize letter information in a single go.

What are the best start words?

I have gathered the top six opening words by their success rate

  1. CRANE: Includes R, N, and E, three of the most frequent letters.
  2. SALET – Highest mathematical coverage of common letter combos
  3. STARE  E in position 5 (where it appears 20% of the time)
  4. ROATE tests all major vowels except U early
  5. SAUCY Y in position 5 is important; it’s the second most frequent final letter after S.
  6. TALES – Common endings (ES) The most frequently occurring letters in English five-letter words

Choose a Unique Second Word

If your first guess gives you zero green tiles which can be very likely even if you are an expert, you need to reset your strategy instead of repeating. Choosing a unique second word with completely different letters can be the fastest way to get some more clarity.

What are smart second word strategies?

Your second guess should adapt based on what the first one revealed. Let me show you how:

When to Use a Fixed Second Word

Scenario: Let’s assume your first guess gave you 0-1 green/yellow tiles, meaning mostly grey

Strategy: Use a pre-decided second word that covers a completely new set of letters.

Example:

  • First: CRANE → All gray except yellow A
  • Second: SHOUT or BUMPY → Tests S, H, O, U, T (or B, U, M, P, Y)

Goal: Maximize information by covering 10 unique letters in your first two guesses. This filters a lot of the alphabet and narrows your options for guess 3.

Pro tip: If CRANE shows nothing, pair it with SHOUT. This combo tests 10 of the 12 most common letters in Wordle answers.

When to Adapt Based on First Guess

Scenario: Let’s say your first guess revealed 2+ correct letters, meaning green or yellow

Strategy: Use that existing knowledge instead of going for new letters.

Example:

  • First: STARE → Green S in position 1, yellow A
  • Second: SLANT or SHAFT → Keeps S, tests A in different positions with new consonants

Goal: Using the confirmed letter to lock down some tiles positions while testing logical word patterns.

Mistake to avoid: Don’t ignore known letters to “explore more.” If you’ve got greens, use them. WordleBot data shows players who ignore confirmed letters waste an average of 1.2 extra guesses.

Vowel Elimination Technique

This strategy can cut your solving time in half:

The Method:

  1. Guess 1: Use a word with A and E, like STARE, CRANE, or SLATE
  2. Guess 2: Use a word with O, U, I like MOUND, POINT, or AUDIO

Result: By the time you get to guess 2, you know the status of ALL FIVE VOWELS. That will give some surety instead of blindly going for random letters

Example:

  • Guess 1: SLATE → Yellow A, gray S/L/T/E
  • Guess 2: AUDIO → Green U in position 2, yellow O, gray D/I
  • Now you know: Word has A, U (pos 2), O | No: E, I, S, L, T, D

You can see from here that words like OAFS, FOAMS, or ROAMS become very obvious.

Use the process of elimination

Wordle is not just only a guessing game but a logical puzzle. Grey tiles can be as beneficial as green if you know how to refine certain alphabets on the basis of given information

How to refine guesses with limited info?

Track what you already know

  • Green letters: Lock these in, as they won’t be moving
  • Yellow letters: List possible positions for each
  • Gray letters: Cross them off your mental alphabet

Example If you know the word has an ‘A’ but it’s yellow in position 2, don’t guess words with ‘A’ in position 2 again. It’s obvious, but often people repeat mistakes

Think in word families, not random words If you know the word ends in -ING or starts with S , don’t test words outside that pattern that can lead to wasted guesses

Prioritize common words over random ones FROST is more likely than FROSH. LIGHT beats LITHE. Wordle editor Tracy Bennett (assigned by NYT in November 2022) manually removes overly difficult words from the answer pool.

Letter Position Frequency Strategy

Not all positions are made equal. Here’s some data I have gathered on where letters appear most often:

Position 1:

  • Most common: S (15%), C (8%), B (7%), T (7%), P (6%)
  • Rare: X, Z, Q most likely never

Position 2:

  • Most common: A (17%), O (14%), E (10%), U (8%)
  • More chances of vowel

Position 3:

  • Most common: A (12%), I (11%), O (10%), N (8%)
  • Middle letters are more evenly distributed

Position 4:

  • Most common: E (18%), N (8%), S (7%), A (7%)
  • E usually occurs the most here

Position 5:

  • Most common: E (20%), Y (8%), T (7%), R (6%), S (6%)
  • E again occurs a lot on endings

Avoid Unlikely Answers

Try not to repeat any grey letters even though it is obvious but some people still make this mistake Secondly stop repearing the yellow one on same spot if R is yellow on position 2 it wont turn green if you put it there again Try not to guess impossible words

Lets make it clear for you Not all valid English words are possible in  Wordle answers because NYT’s editor Tracy Bennett has removed obscure words, British spellings, and anything potentially offensive. That means:

  • Skip old fashioned words like THROE or STAID
  • Avoid British spellings (COLOUR won’t be the answer, but COLOR might)
  • Don’t guess plurals ending in S or ES they can be valid guesses but never the solution
  • Past tense verbs ending in ED are also excluded from answers

Stick to common, everyday five-letter words and you’ll improve your win rate instantly

About Wordle

Origin

Wordle was created by a Welsh software engineer named Josh Wardle in 2021. He originally made it as a gift for his partner, Palak Shah, who loved word puzzles.

He made the game public in October 2021 with just 90 players. By January 2022, it was played by over 2 million daily players during the COVID-19 Times. The New York Times acquired Wordle on January 31, 2022, for a reported low seven-figure sum (around $1-2 million).

What are Wordle rules

You will get to play the game in either easy or hard mode, with easy mode means No restrictions on letter reuse and hard means if you figured out a green or yellow word, keep on using it; basically, dont just forget it 6 attempts will be given to you to guess the right 5-letter word Make sure all the English words you enter are valid After each letter typed you will see a change of colour for that tile Make sure the words that have already been used don’t get repeated.

How to Play Wordle

Wordle is a simple game where you have to guess a 5 letter word by simply typing any valid English letter and press Enter you will see change in color of tiles in the form of feedback

🟩 Green = Correct letter in correct position

🟨 Yellow = Correct letter, wrong position

Gray = Letter not in the todays word

On the basis of this information you can make guesses for the correct word Wordle only gives you 6 Tries to find the correct word and a new word appears each day at midnight according to your local time.

Who owns Wordle?

The New York Times Company Now owns Wordle. They purchased it from the founder, Josh Wardle, mentioned earlier in January 2022, and added it to other popular puzzles like Connections, Spelling Bee, and The Mini Crossword.

Where to play

You can play Wordle officially on the NYT Games website. You will need to create an account first, and then you can start guessing. They also allow you to share your stats with your friends, and WordleBot will compare your performance.

Wordle Alternatives

If you love challenging puzzle games like wordle  and want to play more i have gathered a list of similar wordle variations made by other publishers

Dordle

In Dordle, you solve 2 wordle puzzles at once In this mode, you will get 7 attempts for the right word, and your guesses will be applied to both boards simultaneously. I will give this a 2-star moderate difficulty as compared to wordle.

Quordle

In Quordle you will try to solve Make guesses that reveal information across four wordle puzzles then pick off the easier board first It gives you 9 attempts But definitely a little challenging lets give it a 3 stars.

Octordle

Now this is for the people who have mastered Quordle. You try to solve 8 puzzles simultaneously, and all 8 puzzles get the same guess applied, and you only get 13 attempts. I would give it a 4 as very hard, and it can take up to 10 or 15 minutes per game.

Sedecordle

In Sedecordle we are solving 16 puzzles at once with only 21 attempts. If you ever try this, don’t rush; just focus on letter coverage in early guesses, then work accordingly through easier boards first. Definitely a 5 stars.

Other NYT Word Games

If you are still not done, New York Times offers several daily word puzzles worth checking out:

NYT Strands

Now this is a A themed word search where you connect letters to form words within a 6×8 grid. Every word must relate to the day’s theme, and you must find a special word that uses every letter exactly once and touches two opposite sides of the board.
